On Friday, October 7, Cathy and I were the invited guests of the Filipino American Association of South DuPage for their 38 year celebration.

I have a friend and colleague who is contemplating retirement; I have tremendous respect for how he has arrived at this decision as well as his choice of a path for his future life. Our conversation gave me pause to go back and reflect on my own situation, and my rationale for choosing to leave a profession I loved for a future with multiple unknowns.

There is something special about autumn that always draws my attention, it could be the cooler temperatures, the crispness of the air, the beautiful colors of the leaves or all the activities we all seem to enjoy during the fall. Bike rides, nights sitting out by our fire pits surrounded by good friends, or sitting in the stands at a Friday night football game with a warm blanket around our shoulders, are all activities that many of us enjoy.

As many of you might remember, last week’s Mayor’s Message dealt with good neighbors, and my experience joining a group of great neighbors at a block party in the Pinehurst Subdivision.

There are times I find myself talking to people outside Darien about our community, and I end my comments by saying that Darien really is “a nice place to live.”
