For DuPage County Senior Services please call 630-407-6500.

Hearing Loss/Hearing Aids
The number one untreated health condition among lower income Seniors is hearing loss.  Hearing aids are the treatment but they are very expensive.  Illinois Medicaid pays for hearing aids but few people are aware it does.  Other than ABHF, there are very few providers that will dispense Medicaid hearing aids.  A very high percentage of Seniors in your community have untreated hearing loss and are even more vulnerable now because of Covid-19.   ABHF can help.

The Covid-19 crisis presents a serious compounding problem.  The requirement to wear masks makes it virtually impossible for Seniors with even a mild hearing loss to understand speech.  With and without hearing aids, people are heavily dependent on subconscious lip reading to augment their hearing in order to understand speech.  Masks prevent lip reading and distort and muffle sounds making it nearly impossible for people with a hearing loss to understand speech.  Hearing aids become very necessary for people with even a mild hearing loss.  ABHF can help.

The Americans for Better Hearing Foundation (ABHF) is a 501(c)(3) Non-profit Charity that provides hearing healthcare for Medicaid eligible recipients.  ABHF provides both hearing diagnostics and dispenses the hearing aids.  Medicare and Medicaid cover the cost of the diagnostics and Medicaid will cover the cost of the hearing aids, the batteries, and any repairs for as long as the person is Medicaid eligible.

ABHF needs your assistance to let your Medicaid Seniors and their families know that ABHF can help them get hearing aids at no cost to them.  We are asking you to use your extensive influence, your newsletters, and your “big voice” in your community to tell people about how ABHF can help them receive hearing health services and hearing aids.  If the person is in a nursing home, we are most likely already providing hearing health services in the facility.  The families need to ask the Administrator about ABHF.  If the person is independent, have them or a family member call one of the ABHF Hearing Health Clinics for an appointment.

ABHF operates four (4) Medicaid Hearing Health Clinics for people to visit by appointment.  ABHF also has mobile Audiology teams that visit over 150 nursing homes and supportive living centers in the greater Chicago area.  ABHF is working with the Will County Dept of Health to locate one or more Hearing Health Clinics in Will County Health Facilities and are opening discussions with Cook County.  The current ABHF Hearing Health Clinics are located at:

Guardian Program

Sheriff Mendrick encourages every senior citizen in DuPage County to register with the Guardian System, a free service designed to ensure the well-being of seniors as well as the physically and mentally disabled in the county.

Guardian is a computerized phone system that calls registered members on prearranged days and times to verify that they are okay.  If the member does not respond to the telephone call by entering a four digit code on their telephone, an alarm sounds and a police dispatcher will attempt to reach the member via telephone.

If still unsuccessful, a previously designated neighbor or family member will be contacted.  If the emergency contact cannot be reached, a deputy will be sent to the member’s home to make sure everything is okay.

Guardian is available to DuPage County residents who are over the age of 62 or physically or mentally disabled and live alone.  To register for the Guardian Program you may call the sheriff’s office at 630-407-2400 to have an application mailed to you.  Applications may also be picked up at the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, 501 N.
