Gathering loved ones around a safe and well-managed recreational fire can be a fun outdoor activity for the family. Please be a good neighbor as you enjoy patio fire pits and outdoor fireplaces this season. While the Darien City Code allows burning logs, non-treated wood or wood products in outdoor fireplaces, it prohibits burning refuse, leaves and other yard waste.

Fires are permitted Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. and Friday-Sunday 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Be sure that fire pits are a safe distance from trees and structures, including fences and decks. Use the following tips from Smokey the Bear to help ensure safety during activities that include a fire:

  • Keep your fire to a manageable size.
  • Make sure children and pets are supervised near the fire. Never leave your fire unattended
  • Don’t burn dangerous things like aerosol cans, pressurized containers, glass or aluminum cans. They could explode, shatter and/or create harmful fumes or dust.
  • When extinguishing your fire, pour lots of water on the fire. Drown ALL embers, not just the red ones. Pour until hissing sound stops.
  • If you don't have water, If you do not have water, stir dirt or sand into the embers with a shovel to bury the fire.
  • Continue adding water, dirt or sand and stirring with a shovel until all material is cool.
