Electric Aggregation Program Back

7/25/2023 | Posted in: News
In the June 8th Direct Connect, the City informed all residents that letters would be forthcoming. Now that the letters have been hitting homes, we are sending this as a reminder. This is not a new program and we have done this in the past.

  • The City of Darien will be participating in an electric aggregation program with MC Squared Energy Services, LLC. (mc2 ) beginning September 2023.
  • MC2 was selected to serve the eligible residents and small business customers with an electric supply price equal to the ComEd rate for a 12-month term. After the 12-month term, electric supply will return to ComEd unless the City renews.
  • The one-year agreement includes a price that matches the ComEd rate so there is no savings to the resident. RESIDENTS WILL NOT PAY MORE THAN COMED.
  • However, the contract provides that MC2 will provide a civic payment to Darien in the amount of $10,000, which will go towards neighborhood capital projects.
  • All residents will receive a program notice in the US mail early to mid-July; however, not all residents will be participatingResidents identified to participate will receive notice to opt out if they desire. Click here to view sample letters.
  • The program notice mailed to your home will be based on usage identified by MC2. AGAIN, in either case, you will have the ability to opt in or opt out depending on the letter received.
  • Again, billing rate WILL remain the same and will continue to be sent by ComEd.
  • Just a reminder – any solicitor that comes to your door or calls, asking you to switch to a supplier is NOT associated with the City of Darien, mc2 or ComEd.

Since 2009, Illinois state law allows municipalities to arrange for the provision of electricity to residential and small commercial retail customers by alternative electric suppliers (i.e. suppliers other than ComEd). This process is known as electricity load aggregation. Electricity is still delivered by ComEd, which remains responsible for customer service, such as billing and outage response. On March 20, 2012, the City of Darien voters approved a referendum to operate an Aggregation Program as an ‘opt out’ program. Under the opt-out program, all ComEd residential and small commercial retail customers in the City are automatically included as participants in the Program unless they opt-out of the Program by providing written notice of their intention not to participate as a part of the Aggregation Group. As required by state law, the Corporate Authorities of the City duly passed an Ordinance which authorized submitting to the City's electorate the determination whether or not the Aggregation Program shall operate as an opt-out program.
