On August 4th the Darien City Council unanimously approved an ordinance governing the operation of bicycles, low-speed electric bikes, and personal mobility devices on public property. Darien, like many other communities in the Chicago metropolitan area, have also adopted similar regulations. Communities establish e-bike ordinances to address safety concerns and regulate the use of these increasingly popular vehicles. E-bikes can travel at higher speeds than traditional bicycles, potentially posing risks to both riders and pedestrians. Regulations help manage speed, designate appropriate areas for riding, and clarify rules for parking and usage. For questions regarding the new ordinance , please contact Deputy Chief Austin Jump at 630-353-8314.
If you observe operators of bicycles, low-speed electric bikes, and/or personal mobility devices not complying with the new ordinance, please call 911 to report this activity. You can view the ordinance
