"The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don't want, drink what you don't like, and do what you'd rather not." - Mark Twain
Like so many individuals in my age group, I make more frequent visits to my doctor in order to deal with some of the issues that develop as we find ourselves getting older. While I seem to have a specialist for different areas of my health, my primary care physician, Dr. Anthony DeLorenzo is the one I count on to provide me with excellent advice, and to always be there when providing me with the proper path for my continued good health. Today, we had a consultation, and just as he always does, he gently reminds me of my need to practice proper nutrition, while increasing my daily exercise.
When many of us were younger, weight never seemed to be an issue; we seemed to be able to eat what we enjoyed while maintaining a healthy weight level. As I approached fifty, I found that I needed to pay more attention to my weight, and I found myself putting on and then taking off weight, which we all know is not good for your overall health. I am now at an age where I do not get enough exercise, and while I work to cut out carbs and late night snacks, I find it more difficult to bring my weight down to a healthier status. While my Twain quote is a bit facetious, it sometimes feels like I have to give up those things I love to eat in order to reach a healthier weight.
I know that I do not fight this battle alone; many of us confront this issue, and it becomes harder to maintain that balance, as we get older. I refuse to give up the “weight battle,” and I will continue to work at developing better eating habits with the help of my wife and my doctor. While this is a personal issue for me, I wish all of you out there fighting a similar battle with your weight the perseverance needed to achieve your goal. I guess it is time for more veggies and fruits along with more walking and bike riding. Good luck to all of us who are fighting the “battle of the bulge.”
