“Of all the seasons, autumn offers the most to man and requires the least of Him.” - Hal Borland
There is something special about autumn that always draws my attention, it could be the cooler temperatures, the crispness of the air, the beautiful colors of the leaves or all the activities we all seem to enjoy during the fall. Bike rides, nights sitting out by our fire pits surrounded by good friends, or sitting in the stands at a Friday night football game with a warm blanket around our shoulders, are all activities that many of us enjoy. Autumn is about Octoberfest, Halloween, hayrides and a chance to open the window at night and enjoy a fresh breeze as we enjoy a good night’s sleep.
When I was young, autumn meant winter was around the corner, and I would have to go out and rake leaves, bring in the lawn furniture and button down for colder weather. Some of you may still feel that way about the fall. In my case, getting older has taught me the need to appreciate and enjoy all the seasons of the year; not to bemoan the passing of another year in my life, but rather to enjoy each day, and the possibilities that each day will bring.
As Rudolfo Anaya states, “there is a time in the last few days of summer when the ripeness of autumn fills the air, and time is quiet and mellow.” I wish for all of you to have some time to enjoy the beauty of autumn, experiencing the “quiet and mellow” that this beautiful season brings to all of us. I think I will go out, take a walk or a bike ride, and just enjoy the beauty of the day. Care to join me?
