“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” - Dr. Seuss
Imagine a four-year-old boy, his eight-year-old sister and their father going out every Wednesday evening to a Chicago Public Library to select two books each for their weekly reading. At age four, I did not have a library card, so I was fortunate that my sister Janet would always sign out my two selections for that week. My father believed that developing a love for reading would assist us in our educational training and throughout our lives. My father served as a great motivator and role model, and I will always remember his spending time each night, picking up his Bible and reading for several hours before turning in for bed. Just reading a book was not all he required, we not only took out two books each week, we had to provide a verbal report on the content of each book before we ventured back to the library for two new readings.
These weekly visits initiated my love for reading; while I now read books on my Nook, I still love the feel of a hardcover, and I welcome the opportunity to share my books with friends and family. While I love to read for pleasure, my education and career always demanded that I could sit, read and comprehend a professional document in a short period, and it assisted me in my writing and vocabulary attainment. The greatest gift though that reading has given me is the ability to put aside the problems of the day, as I find myself engrossed in a book every night before bed.
When you get a chance, take some time to visit our Indian Prairie Library, and take a look at all the great resources they offer to our residents. They will assist you in finding a way to explore our world through reading, and as Dr. Seuss says, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” I hope that all of you will have a chance, to get lost and explore our world in a great book. Happy reading!
