We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” - Cynthia Ozick

Let us be honest, we all have days when we feel as if our problems will consume us and there is no solution to any of the issues we are experiencing. What makes it more troublesome, is that if we look around us, we are surrounded by others who appear carefree without a worry in the world. These moments in our lives can last a day or stay with us for a longer period. I do not believe that any of us are immune to these “dark” periods in our lives. The question then is how to deal with these days, how do we bring ourselves out of this “funk?”

I have a good friend whose name I will not mention, who went through a very troublesome period in her life. If you met her today, you would never guess that she had any issues in her life that caused her worry or upset. From time to time, she will post a positive message on Facebook, and her messages always seem to deal with looking at life from a positive standpoint while appreciating and making the most from the gifts that we sometimes take for granted. I always feel better when I read her messages, and when I am with her, she radiates a positive attitude, and a sense of gratitude for all she has in life. I have been trying to emulate her behavior by concentrating on the gifts that I do have, rather on the negatives that life throws my way.  I can provide you with a list of those things that I have that I am most grateful for, starting with my family and my friends and the joy they bring to my life. I would offer that just as we all have “dark” days, when given thought to, we could each find a long list of that which is truly meaningful, those things that we are most grateful for having in our lives. Let me offer some advice, when going through some troubling times, do as my friend does, rejoice for the gifts that we have been given. May we all find how acknowledging our gifts can overcome any dark period in our lives.
